A decade has soon passed. We’ve gone from glowsticks and the commercial breakthrough of electronic dance music, to a digital revolution with producers in every bedroom. The electronic music industry has evolved, but what has made the change?

Which releases or producers/dj’s has had the biggest impact on EDM?

What technology or gadget has had the strongest influence on the scene?

And what has been typical 00ies when we look back at the last ten years of EDM?

    Releases/Producers:
Hard to look past Armin and ASOT as a centrepiece of the trance scene.

Not to kiss arse, but I reckon Uncle Marcus has been really important; the last 10 years haven’t produced much really mad, out-there innovation but Outside The Box has been just that.

And for shear anal perfectionism leading to the ultimate in quality over quantity, my $0.02 is for GTR/Gareth Emery

    Tech/Gadget
Godda be the macbook. OK so its main influence might have been to allow any kid to bang out a few beats, but that accessibility certainly hasn’t been all bad http://yfrog.com/0tzlqj.

    This is a tough one.

The 00ies brought us couple of big things technology wise. The modern DAW’s and software synths stormed into the scene. There aren’t much producers relying on a hardware sequencers anymore – and for a good reason.

Modern softsynths are capable to big sounds, and use correctly they give good sonic impact. On the otherside, software can sound really thin in some hands, but so can hardware.

My choice for the technology gadget is however Pioneer CDJ-1000. In early 00ies most DJ’s still used vinyl and it was the most handy way to get the latest music, in vinyl. Nowadays, at least in trance, almost without exception people are using CDJ’s solely.

What it comes to the sound, I have to raise one thing over others (and this is again seen from trance side of things). Anjunabeats.

Anjunatrance is nowadays known term in trance, and it has stood for quality for some time now. The level of releases has been really high, and you can spot an Anjunarelease even though you haven’t heard the track before.

I have to admit the tracks aren’t standing out that much anymore as they did in 2004-2006 era, but they still are pretty damn good compared to 98% trance released these days.

Typical 00eis thing would be software. Remember people talking about Reason sound. Hardware guys whining about “that sound is software”. That’s my way seeing what has been going on in the scene.

People are still critical, but they are giving a chance to new technologies. And that is something I’m awaiting the 10ies to bring us. More open minded and creative producers.

Actually I wish people started to make music again, and leave Producing. Music is still about the feeling. Remember that.

-I think the whole EDM scene is the sum of many talented producers. This thing is evolving all the time :)

What technology or gadget has had the strongest influence on the scene?

-Quality software plug-ins and synths. They made it possible to achieve quality production in bedroom without expencive gear.

And what has been typical 00ies when we look back at the last ten years of EDM?

    -The gated clap!

    biggest impact:
good question. I´d say many releases have shown that the gaps between styles are getting smaller and smaller. Many artists blend different styles, creating something unique.
But if I had to pick one, I´d have to say Armin, not because he had some good productions, but because he was one of the first to use the web in the right way. Many artists in the trance scene (including Mr. Schossow) have had a good push of popularity because Armin played their stuff.

    Tech / Gadget:
For DJing, Software like Traktor and Ableton that make it possible to put a set together without being able to mix.

Producing: Computers powerful enough to have myriads of good sounding softsynths running at the same time.

    typical 00ies:
using clap and noise fx instead of the typical 909 crash

    Current score: 1
